Make Your Shower Open Concept

Your bathroom should be a place where you can completely unwind. Everything from
the colors of the wall to the layout of the shower should be designed to melt the stress
away at the end of the day. So why not make it feel like a sauna?

A lot of people have started to use this line of thought as they redesign their
bathrooms, and it’s led to the rise in popularity of open concept showers. The idea is
to make your entire bathroom feel like your own private spa. The flooring concept
flows seamlessly from your shower into the rest of the bathroom, and tile surrounds
the entire room. Another popular trend is ditching the glass shower door to keep with
the unobstructed vibes.

While we’re all about creating a bathroom that feels comfortable for you, there are a
few things to keep in mind before committing to an open concept bathroom.

For starters, you’ll lose a ton of climate control. Think of that wonderful moment after
you’ve taken a long, hot shower where you open the glass door and the steam comes
rolling out. Now, your shower has to work overtime heating up the entire room, and it
can’t do so very effectively. Taking a warm shower during a midwest winter morning
may not be as relaxing of an experience as a result.

Secondly, you’ll have to create everything custom to your design. The floors have to be
designed for drainage, and the walls must all be 100% waterproofed. You’ll lose the
ability to incorporate easy, prefab materials because you’ll need to make sure it
perfectly fits your room. You’ll also need to think carefully about the aim and
positioning of the showerhead so you can keep the water confined in one specific area
(because no one wants to sit on a damp toilet seat). The customized elements may
also add some difficulty when it comes time to sell your house.

There are definitely benefits to an open concept bathroom such as it’s easier to clean
and it can be a more accessible option for people as they age. Just make sure you
consider both sides before you commit to this popular home trend.
